Context, not theory

Tax guides.

These guides cover the questions that come up before a filing even starts — not tax strategy in the abstract, but the specific mechanics of S-Corp returns, 1040 checklists, and filing across more than one state.

Why guides instead of just a checklist.

A document checklist tells you what to send. A guide explains why it matters — why a shareholder's compensation gets flagged, why one state's apportionment rule differs from another's, why a K-1 sometimes contradicts what a shareholder expected. That context is what keeps a filing from generating a follow-up question two weeks later.

What's covered.

Guides are organized around real filing decisions: what counts as reasonable compensation for an S-Corp shareholder, how multi-state apportionment actually works, what triggers a Schedule E versus a simple rental note, and how to read your own K-1 once it's issued. Each one is written for someone about to file, not someone studying for an exam.

Who each guide is for.

Some guides are written for S-Corp owners preparing for their first 1120S; others are for individual filers weighing whether their return still counts as "basic." The guide index notes which filer type each one applies to, so you're not reading through a business-tax guide looking for individual-return answers.

How guides relate to the glossary.

Guides assume you already know what the underlying terms mean — they focus on decisions and process, not definitions. If a guide uses a term you're not sure of, the Tax Glossary has the short version; the guide has the longer, situation-specific one.

Using a guide before you engage.

You don't need to be a client to read these. If a guide raises a question specific to your situation — a multi-state filing, an unusual K-1, a first-year S-Corp election — that's exactly what the free 30-minute intro call is for.
